9 hours of hard graft.

Got up early this morning, had a leisurely breakfast, then headed down to the plot about 9. We have a strip of land at the end of plot rows, about 10 feet deep, which is being kept clear to allow car parking. The one at the end of my strip has had the odd bit of junk dumped on it, which really needs tidying up a bit and some hardcore dumped in its place to stop it getting muddy. 4 days of freedom.

Today was hard work. By 10am, I had that "I'm off soon, so I've switched off already" feeling at work and the day just dragged. The one and only good thing was that being there gave me an opportunity to pick up some more pallets to bring home.

The big build up.

Another great day today. Had to work, but the weather was great and every time I got the chance to go outside, I didn't want to go back in again. I'm also starting to feel like I don't want to be at work as it's time wasted when I could be on my plot.

New allotment – Day 1

Worked myself into a right state yesterday with the frustration of not being able to get onto the plot. Spent most of the day stomping around angrily cursing about the allotment company secretary not having called me back to arrange a time to meet so he could show me around. Realised during the evening that I was behaving like a small child, needed to relax a bit and to just get on with other stuff until the call came.

Growing frustration

Still not onto my plot and my stress level is beginning to rise as a result. The weather has definitely broken and I'm beginning to get more than a little nervous that the weeds on the plot will have had a major head start by the time I get to turn my first spade full of earth. I've also booked a couple of days holiday in 10 days time with the intention of getting the plot in shape. At this rate, I'm wondering if I'll have to cancel them. Read the rest of this post »

Beeing good.

I don't know what it is about bees, but their plight really bothers me.

Any second now….

I've spent the whole week hoping I'd come home in the evening to find a letter from the allotment co. with a key for the gate and some idea of how I go about finding my plot. Nothing had materialised by this morning's post, so I dug out the letter from the secretary and re-read it, only to realise I'd missed the last paragraph about arranging to meet him on site so he can outline the plot with me. So I've just called his number to find out that he's out and about somewhere at the moment. Now just waiting for a return call when he reappears so we can arrange a time to meet up.

I can't believe I'm this close to getting my plot but, thanks to my own stupidity, having to wait still. If I'd had the sense to read the letter properly, I could be digging as I write this. Which would have been nice, seeing as the intermittent showers seem to have stopped and the sun's now providing some much needed warmth. The same warmth which no doubt is kicking all the weeds on the plot into germinating!

Sweet success?

It's funny, but just a few hours after posting pictures of this morning's snow, it's now turned into a gloriously sunny afternoon. When I bought my flat, I picked it particularly because the main windows are south facing. This means I have the advantage of thermal heat from the sun and this afternoon, the winter sun's so warm I've had to open the windows to bring the temperature down a bit.

Neverending winter

After the beautiful bright crisp day yesterday, I'd begun to think we might be seeing the end of the extreme cold weather we've been experiencing.

Woke up this morning and opened the curtains to this.

Fortunately, it seems to be thawing pretty quickly so fingers crossed it won't cause me too much hassle getting to work tomorrow - assuming we don't get any more overnight. Read the rest of this post »

Wilko and out (and about)

More progress this week towards taking possession of my plot. The allotment company secretary wrote to me as promised, gave me the plot number and asked that I forward payment along with written confirmation of my acceptance. So I quickly wrote out a cheque and stopped off at his house to drop the payment off after work Friday evening. Read the rest of this post »
